The Beginning

From 1999 to 2003 the Kangaroo Foundation, in Colombia, received 6 teams from India conformed by a pediatrician and a nurse (AIIMS New Delhi, KEM Mumbai, SMS Medical college Jaipur, PGIMER Chandigarh, KGMU Lucknow and IOG Chennai). The groups stayed in Colombia for one month learning the first stage of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and then returned to their home towns in order to start the Kangaroo Mother Programs by themselves.

Thanks to the training about the first stage in KMC done in Colombia, nowadays India counts with six Kangaroo Programs, which help to save more than 10,000 premature babies per year.

Nevertheless In the initial training courses given in Colombia, India received a training(first stage: focused exclusively to the survival of the premature new born or low weight birth (medical and nursery training) and did not send psychologist or professionals who were in charge of the evaluation and the follow-up of the child´s psychomotor development during his first year. The second stage presented in this project is an essential component to guarantee the infant´s satisfactory development because it prevents troubles on the development, promotes his life´s quality, and handle problems during his development that can be solved if they are detected on time.
